چکیده

Resting potato tuber tissue possesses only faint activity of the two dehydrogenases of the oxi dative pentose phosphate cycle, glucose-6-phosphateand 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase. Slicing of the tissue, however, greatly enhances the action of both enzymes. The slicing-induced increase in activity is a consequence of intensified action of at least 5 glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase isozymes and a more differentiated activation/inactivation of seven 6-phosphogluconate dehydro genase isozymes. Using density labelling and isopycnic equilibrium centrifugation it could be demonstrated, that the bulk of both enzymes appearing after slicing the tissue is the result of de novo synthesis rather than activation of pre-existing proenzymes.

Lipid Metabolism by Rat Lung in vitro EFFECT OF STARVATION AND RE-FEEDING ON UTILIZATION OF [U-14C]GLUCOSE BY LUNG SLICES BY RICHARD W. SCHOLZ

1. The incorporation of [U-14C]glucose into several lipid components of lung and liver slices, and the activities of glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase (EC 1.1.1.49), 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase (EC 1.1.1.44), 'malic' enzyme (EC 1.1.1.40) and NADP-isocitrate dehydrogenase (EC 1.1. 1.42) of the cell cytosol were examined in normal, starved and re-fed rats. 2. Lipogenesis and the activities o...

Interrelation of stromal NAD(P)ase and human erythrocytic 6-phosphogluconic dehydrogenase.

Pentose phosphate metabolism of human red blood cells may be altered by inherited deficiency in cytoplasmic enzymes like glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (D-glucose-6-phosphate:NADP oxidoreductase, E.C. 1.1.1.49), resulting in increased hemolytic susceptibility.' This deficiency may be due either to a mutation at a structural gene or to an alteration in the rate of synthesis or of destruction ...

Enzymatic assay of inorganic phosphate with use of sucrose phosphorylase and phosphoglucomutase.

We developed a new enzymatic method for the assay of inorganic phosphate (Pi) by using sucrose phosphorylase (SP; EC 2.4.1.7) and phosphoglucomutase (PGM; EC 5.4.2.2). Pi is transferred to sucrose by SP, producing alpha-D-glucose 1-phosphate (G1P) and alpha-D-fructose. G1P is transphosphorylated by PGM in the presence of alpha-D-glucose 1,6-bisphosphate to form alpha-D-glucose 6-phosphate, whic...

Glucose metabolism in Neisseria gonorrhoeae.

The metabolism of glucose was examined in several clinical isolates of Neisseria gonorrhoeae. Radiorespirometric studies revealed that growing cells metabolized glucose by a combination on the Entner-Doudoroff and pentose phosphate pathways. A portion of the glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate formed via the Entner-Doudoroff pathway was recycled by conversion to glucose-6-phosphate. Subsequent catabolis...

Absence of effects of dietary wheat bran on the activities of some key enzymes of carbohydrate and lipid metabolism in mouse liver and adipose tissue.

1. The effects of a 100 g/kg dietary substitution of wheat bran on the body-weight gain, food consumption and faecal dry weight of mice given a high-sucrose diet and on the activities of some key enzymes of carbohydrate and lipid metabolism in liver and adipose tissue were studied. 2. Wheat bran had no effect on body-weight gain, food consumption or faecal dry weight. 3. Wheat bran had no effec...
